今回は電気通信大学2019年度の入試より。
いまこそ、これを考えるべきかな？
と思ったので書いてみました。
お題はこれです。
Do you think that international sporting events help to support world peace? Why or why not?
少なくとも二つの理由を挙げて
英語で具体的に答えよと
指示があります。
コロナ禍のいま、延期になった
東京五輪どころか地域予選の開催も
危ぶまれています。
すでに「商業五輪」と言われ、
多くの業種を巻き込んだ
一大観光イベントとなってしまった
オリンピック。
「出場することに意義がある」と
言われた平和主義は、
いまだ国際スポーツイベントに
息づいているのでしょうか？
それとも・・・
すでに大義名分と
化しているのでしょうか？
今回、私は、否定的な立場から
書きました。
もしかしたら肯定的な立場から
答案を作ればもっと書きやすいの
かもしれないけれど。
In my opinion,
international sporting events
don't always help to support
world peace. First, certainly it is
precious to see athletes
from different parts of
the world competing;
but in fact their results
would rather make
their nationalities stronger
than contribute to world peace. Competing in international
sporting events can divide
people who are watching
them, causing some people
to feel angry, or making them
have negative feelings
toward a particular
country or area. There
seems to be an assumption
that world peace means
the time when all the people
regardless of their nationalities
can enjoy sports, but actually
athletes and audience
cannot play and enjoy
their sports without their
nationalism. Next, athletes
have to get supports from
their nations. This means
the stronger their nation is
and the more money it can
invest in athletes, so athletes
can get a bigger chance
to win in the events. That is,
performance of athletes
can depend on their
nations' economic power.
This trend cannot get along
with world peace.
