今回は２０２４東京大学第二問（A）の、「自転車は人類の最も偉大な発明の一つである」について書きます。
６０～８０語の英語で自分の考えを述べよとあります。
私はこれまで、指示文の意向に従って構成を考えることが多かったのですが、このお題に関しては・・・
YESとは言い難く、NOの立場から考えてみました。
「自転車は、人類の最も偉大な発明の一つだとは思わない」
理由は
◎スピードの点でも運搬量の点でも自動車の方が役に立つ
◎自転車は手ごろな価格で購入でき、免許も要らないので多くの人が利用するが、そのため安易に捨てられて廃棄物処理や再利用のためのコストがかかる。
身近なモノなのであっという間に書けてしまいます。
I don't think a bicycle is the greatest invension of what humans have had. First of all, a car is actually more useful than a bicycle in that a car goes faster and a car can carry more people. Moreover, we can buy a bicycle relatively economically and use it without a license, which in turn, has led to a lot of waste because many people throw away their bicycles easily. It costs money to reuse those thrown bicycles.
